Dean "Butch" Zulauf served from February 24, 1943 through January 8, 1946. Cpl. Zulauf served in the 2nd Recon SQ in New Guinea, South Philippines, and Borneo. His chance meeting with Arenzville High School classmate Lee Nicol in a South Pacific hospital enabled him to relay word home to his parents that his friend and classmate had survived a kamikaze attack. Butch's parents promptly got word to Mrs. Albert Nicol, and the next day when she received a telegram from the Secretary of War informing her that her son was missing in action, she already knew he was recovering in a hospital in New Guinea.
