Entered service as a private in Co G, 1st MO Cav; furloughed to Morgan County, IL in Dec 1861 and did not return until Apr 1862; record states this was due to illness. In Dec 1863, was appointed as Captain to the 1st AR Col’d Inf (also known as 1st AR Infantry – African Descent.) This unit was later designated the 46 USC IL (46th United States Colored Infantry Regiment).
