His actual birth year is not clear, but he was possibly one of the oldest men to serve. Muster rolls describe him as 43 years old, single, confectioner. Subequent records are lacking. Cass County Draft Registration rolls show him as a 54-year-old resident of Arenzville township in 1863 with a record of service in the 14th IL Inf.
