The military record describes him as “single, farmer” at enlistment. There are multiple men named Henry Meyer who were contemporaries and living in Cass County around this time, but the Henry C. Meyer who served in G Co of the 34th IL Infantry is the man who is buried in Perry, OK. Based on a biosketch of an older brothrer, Christian L. Meyer, their parents were Frederick and Charlotte (Klemen or Klamen) Meyer. The father died in Germany, and the mother remarried to Charles Finke and emigrated in 1854. Being the older son, Henry may have emigrated earlier, though according to the 1900 federal census, he arrived in 1857. By 1861, he was living in Cass County, where he enlisted in the Union Army. After the war, he married and farmed near Arenvzille and Virginia, IL. In 1903, he bought land near Perry, OK, and he and his wife moved there to take up farming/ranching.
