Cass County Draft Registration rolls show him as “William Winke,” 47-year-old resident of Arenzville township with service in the 101st IL Inf. He specified Meredosia as his residence upon entry to service. Described as “single, farmer.” (brother to John Langdon Weeks and uncle to well remembered Arenzville residents J.A., Bert, H.G. and Paddy Weeks and their sister Carrie Englebach) A Register of Deaths of Volunteers shows he died at a field hospital of chronic diarrhea. Burial place not identified. His half-brother, Orville Bushnell, serving in the same company, also died during active duty about eight months later. He was severely wounded in the leg at the Battle of Kennesaw, GA, and died of his wounds at a Chattanooga hospital on 15 Jun 1864. Their mother lived in Meredosia.
