In 1860, he appears in the federal census in the household of David Giger, living in Meredosia precinct, Morgan County, IL. He is described in muster rolls as “single, farmer.” Though he appears on the rolls as “Jacob H.,” he also appears in records as “Jacob F.” or “Fritz.” He lived in the Meredosia area but cited Arenzville has his residence when he entered service. After the war, he was a butcher and a farmer in Meredosia. He was one of the charter stockholders of Farmers and Traders State Bank in Meredosia.
