A son of Charles (Sr) and Dorothea Sandman. His parents were both born in Germany. Census records show tthem living in Arenzville in 1850 and in 1870 (In 1860 census, the family is living in Monroe, Cass, IL). The father was disabled (blind), a result of an accident while he was working and a (wood?) chip flew into his eye. After the war, Fred worked for the railroad, married and lived in Meredosia, where he had a harness shop. He was a patient at both the Quincy, IL and Danville, IL, veterans’ hospitals in his later years.
