An early settler in Arenzville, he had a university education from Giessen University in Germany and began work as a cooper in Beardstown after his immigration. He also worked on the farm of Dr. Georg Engelbach and had a harness shop and saloon in Arenzville. His military experience (serving as a musician in various infantry units) was already extensive when he entered service for the Civil War. He was among the oldest of Arenzville soldiers to serve in the war.
