Buried Far From Home
Not all of Arenzville's Civil War veterans returned to Illinois. Many who survived the war went on to build new lives across the country – and some who fell in battle were buried where they lay, in national cemeteries far from the community that sent them. The men documented in this archive are buried in more than 15 U.S. states – from Georgia to Washington, from Kentucky to Oregon.

Among those resting farthest from home:- Henry Telkemeyer – Killed at Resaca, GA, May 1864. Buried at Marietta National Cemetery, Georgia. For decades, his grave bore the name of another man – an error corrected by relatives in 2023, with a new stone placed in 2025.
- James B. Fozzard – Died at Bridgeport, AL, May 1864. Buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery, Tennessee.
- John S. Clark – Wounded at Chickamauga. Died in Monroe, Washington, 1910. Buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Monroe, WA.
- Benjamin C. Mathews – Born in Arenzville. Died in Portland, Oregon, 1917. Buried at Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery.
