His pension record shows service in the 113th IL Inf and the 120th IL Inf. Post-war, he married and lived in the Meredosia region. His brother, James Bennett, described as a resident of Meredosia, served in a Missouri regiment (Co I, 11th MO Inf). Samuel may have been living with his daughter Laura Nairn in Crawford, KS, at the time of his death since he appears there in the 1925 KS state census.
