William H. Filey

Birth Year: 1840
Birth Place: Morgan County, IL
Residence at Enlistment: Meredosia, IL
Regiment(s): Co I, 11th MO Inf; Co D, 113th IL Inf
Military Notes:

Records for the 11th MO Inf show he entered service 30 Jul 1861; from July through Oct 1862, he was on the hospital rolls; he was discharged at Lagrange, TN on 25 Nov 1862. He mustered in to the 113th IL Inf in Jan 1864; records state he deserted while on furlough at Meredosia, IL in Nov 1864. His veteran’s grave marker cites service in the “11th IL Inf,” but rolls do not show a person who matches his information in that regiment. Undocumented transfer?

Death Year: 1917
Death Place: Arenzville, IL
Burial Place: Arenzville, IL
Cemetery Name: Arenzville East Cemetery
Find-a-Grave#: 27476514
Spouse(s): Emma Caroline Dyche (m. 1878 in Morgan County, IL)
Remarks: Buried in Arenzville.

He served in infantry units in both Missouri and Illinois. Veteran datases describe him as a deserter in 1865 when he failed to return from furlough to Meredosia, but this could be an error. He applied for an invalid’s pension in 1887, and the record shows service in both MO and IL companies. His grave marker shows service in the “11th IL Inf,” but this does not agree with other records. He lived in Bath, IL, for a few years after his marriage.
